Pre-Surgery Preparation
A pre-anesthetic evaluation is vital for your pet’s safety. Prior to any anesthetic procedure, your pet will be examined by a doctor. Your pet will also receive pre-anesthetic blood analysis. The blood profile evaluates blood glucose, kidney function, liver enzymes, white and red blood cells, platelets, and many other internal organ functions crucial in determining if anesthesia is safe for your pet. Other diagnostics available to aid in your pet’s evaluation include ECG, digital radiographs, ultrasound, and PetMAP blood pressure.
The evening before the procedure you will receive a phone call with detailed instructions. The morning of the procedure you and your pet will be greeted by the doctor performing the surgery and the technician who is assisting. They will go over any questions or concerns you may have. Your pet will again receive a full physical exam including checking heart rate, respiratory rate, gum color, and body temperature.
Each patient receives an individualized anesthetic plan based on his/her needs. They are placed in a heated compartment with plenty of soft bedding in our ICU area. The ICU area is closely monitored and is equipped with infusion pumps to deliver the appropriate volume of intravenous fluids, oxygen supply if needed, EKG, and heated cages.
