An Australian Shepherd running with his tongue out.

Have you noticed it feels a bit like deja vu scrolling through social media seeing many of the same kinds of cats and dogs splattered all over your social feed? These pets are adorable and clearly very popular. Maybe you’d love to start a social media page for one of them yourself.  Oakhurst Veterinary Hospital has compiled the 5 most popular pet breeds of 2022 so that you can consider what breed might be right for you before you go out and adopt.

5. Golden Retriever

These soft, fluffy and often a bit derpy dogs will be loyal to you no matter what.  Even professional dog trainers say that they would recommend a Golden Retriever as someone’s first dog purely because they aim to please and are quite a bit easier to train. Goldens have a gorgeous double-coat; the outer coat is long and often wavy, while the inner coat is more dense. Goldens are highly adaptable to new settings and exceptionally friendly with strangers, making it easy to board or leave them with a sitter. It can be a major adjustment adopting your first pet. To help ease your mind, Oakhurst has a luxurious pet hotel where your Golden can stay and play while you’re away!

4. Mini Poodle

Maybe you don’t have a lot of space for a big dog or even a huge cat, so you might consider a toy poodle. Usually seen online being dressed up or carried around, the Toy Poodle maxes out at around 10 inches in height, and they typically weigh between 6-10 pounds. These breeds have curly fur and require quite a bit of upkeep to keep them camera ready. Oakhurst has complete grooming services to help you bath, trim, and clip your mini pood.

3. Maine Coon

Maine Coons look like they belong in the latest medieval fantasy drama series. They can be as large as a dog and have beautiful long coats and intense eyes with multiple color variations. Don’t let their looks fool you, these big fluffs are very friendly and intelligent, making them excellent family pets.  Because Maine Coons can weigh up to 25 pounds, they may be prone to issues such as: hip dysplasia, spinal muscular atrophy or obesity. It is important to ensure you have an excellent wellness plan to make sure your majestic kitty remains in the best of health.

2. Persian

If you’re looking for a cat that has many expressions, a Persian might be the right pet for you. Known for their lap napping and quirky personalities, Persians make for a great companion. Unfortunately, a high percentage of Persians run the risk of having health issues such as: haircoat disorder, dental disease, overgrown nails, and eye discharge. Luckily, Oakhurst has a complete suite of services, including eye and dermatology care.

1.     Australian Shepherd

Coming in all different color schemes, the Australian Shepard wins first place for most popular pet of 2022.
