We get it. Cats are famously put-together animals who seem like they do not need much help from us. Their tidiness, independence, and convincing vitality lead many to question the importance of routine cat wellness exams. While a cat may be in perfect health, there’s an equal possibility that they’re hiding symptoms related to an underlying health condition. Distinct Life Stages, Unique Needs

If you’ve had your cat since their infancy, you know that their first year was on the busy side. After their initial wellness exam (shortly after adoption), we see kittens every 3–4 weeks in order to complete their series of vaccinations. If they need to be dewormed, we will need to see them every 2–3 weeks until it is resolved.

When they aren’t sleeping or eating, the average cat spends an inordinate amount of time cleaning itself. Indeed, cats have strong attachments to tidiness, and they use their barb-covered tongue to get the job done.

It’s only natural that a furry animal with a rough, brush-like tongue would simply have to endure coughing up a hairball or two. Consequently, cat hairballs are simply part of the territory. Until, that is, they indicate a larger problem.

Cats are pretty resilient, always landing on their feet and whatnot. There are some things that even cats can’t be totally safe from, such as a few diseases that, despite the miracles of modern medicine, can make the healthiest cat crumble.

In particular, infection with the viruses that cause feline leukemia (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency syndrome (FIV) can be devastating. Oakhurst Veterinary Hospital knows how horrible these diseases can be and want cat owners everywhere to know how to best protect their pets from FeLV and FIV. 

One of the more common and potentially frustrating reasons that our clients bring their cats to see us at Oakhurst Veterinary Hospital is trouble in the litter box.
