Most vaping product packages have clear warnings that the product and its contents are not safe for children or pets. We are now more aware, too, of the risks to people where we once thought they were relatively harmless. Vaping poisoning remains a problem for pet owners when their pets are exposed to or ingests these nicotine substitutes.

The team at Oakhurst Veterinary Hospital want to give you the facts about vaping dangers and pets. Learn more about vape safety around pets by reading on.

What Is Vaping?

Vaping is when you inhale a liquid produced by aerosol that simulates smoking by heating the chemicals called “e-juice”.

This chemical concoction contains numerous ingredients, such as formaldehyde, glycerine, nicotine, and sometimes THC (the active compound of majijuana) that is dangerous to both cats and dogs.

How Does It Put Your Pet at Risk?

There are many ways your pet’s safety could be at risk when using e-cigarettes. These include:

Ingestion of e-cigarettes or e-juice – Many types of e-juice are flavored with appealing scents that can peak a dog or cat’s interest. For this reason, the Animal Poison Control hotline has experienced an increase in calls as a result of dogs (and sometimes cats) ingesting the substance.

When nicotine is ingested, it causes problems with the central nervous system and respiratory distress. Without quick intervention and treatment, this can be fatal.

Inhalation of vaping chemicals – The second form of risk to pets is through inhaling the “smoke”. The toxins produced after smoking e-cigarettes include nicotine, hydrocarbons, and aluminum. In 2016, the World Health Organization announced that second-hand aerosols from e-cigarettes are a source of hazardous air quality for people and pets.

Breathing in the toxins increases your pet’s risk of developing respiratory problems and cancers of the lungs, sinuses, and nasal cavities.

Protecting Your Pet from Vaping Exposure

Protecting your pet from these hazards relies on awareness and vigilance in keeping e-cigs and their products away. Be sure to:

  • Put away all vape pens, oils, etc. in a drawer or other place that is inaccessible to pets.
  • Vape in a separate area of the home or outside, avoiding your pet’s presence.
  • Ask people to avoid vaping in your home, but rather go outside to do so.
  • Put vaping items you throw away in a lidded trash container that cannot be opened by your pet.
