Oakhurst Veterinary Hospital is committed to providing services and education about how to keep your pet’s teeth and gums healthy.
Pet Dental Care
We adhere to the standards set forth by the American Veterinary Dental Society. Using advanced technology, such as digital x-ray imaging, our team can diagnose and treat a variety of issues, including periodontal disease.
Although preventable, periodontal disease is, unfortunately, all too common among cats and dogs. Left untreated, it can cause not only bad breath, but a great deal of pain and discomfort as well. Severe cases can affect the heart, lungs, and kidneys and can even be fatal.
At Oakhurst Veterinary Hospital, our clients can take advantage of a free oral exam at any time. Your veterinarian will thoroughly examine your pet’s teeth and gums and help you determine the type of care that would be most beneficial for your companion.
During a routine cleaning, we examine the whole mouth, looking for signs of periodontal disease, lesions, sores, and diseased teeth. However, the only way to determine the entire health of your pet’s mouth is to do so under anesthesia. This allows us to assess the complete condition of your pet’s teeth by probing below the gum line, where much of the bacteria hides. Under anesthesia, we can safely remove any plaque buildup both above and below the gum line. X-rays of the roots and supporting bone are also essential.
