Dr. Melanie Hunt graduated with honors from Cornell University with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Biology and Animal Physiology. She enjoyed Cornell so much that she stayed in Ithaca, New York for another 4 years to graduate from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1997. She then completed an internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston Massachusetts before returning to New Jersey.
While Dr. Hunt’s hometown is Denville, NJ, she grew up enjoying summers at the Monmouth County shore. So, when she returned to NJ after schooling, she headed “down the shore”. She has worked in New Jersey as a small animal general practitioner for 20 years before joining Oakhurst Veterinary Hospital in 2018. She joined Oakhurst Veterinary Hospital because of our reputation for excelling in preventative wellness care to support each pet’s best life!
Dr. Hunt has a special interest in dentistry and oral surgery. She is very passionate about saving teeth. That includes being proactive with oral care both at home customized for each individual pet and being proactive with professional cleanings to avoid losing teeth! We want your pet to keep all their teeth for life! Every year, Dr. Hunt pursues additional training in veterinary dentistry on new or advanced dental techniques for pets.
In her free time, she enjoys walking the boardwalks with her husband Steve along the Jersey shore, where she has gotten lucky enough to witness the occasional whale breach! Her four legged family members include Tuxey, a four year old black and white Tuxedo cat and Kelly Parker, a five year old labradoodle. Tuxey was adopted from a shelter where she had been in quarantine for a leg wound for several months. Fortunately, she bounced back like a champ! Tuxey’s favorite pastimes are looking out the sliding glass door to supervise the birds in the back yard for several hours a day and finding the best, most sunny napping spots around the house. Tuxey also enjoys Sunday NFL football (aka family couch time). When the Jaguars or Lions (or any cat friendly teams) are playing, she will of course route for them! Kelly Parker is a 5 year old labradoodle who is a sweet, inquisitive girl who excels at cleaning up any crumbs, real or imaginary, that might hit the floor. Kelly Parker also excels at frisbee and even brings the frisbee back most of the time. Kelly Parker gets an “A” for daily tooth brushing -- she is very cooperative and maintains a pearly white smile!
